On 26 September 1987, Pashimbanga Natya Akademi was established under the Department of Information and Cultural Affairs, Government of West Bengal with a view to create a supporting ambience to the practice and development of Histrionic Art. Its main objectives are, to encourage the practice and development of Theatrical Art throughout West Bengal, encourage production of Bengali drama and give financial support to the theatre Groups of the state as much as possible.
